A year of improvement saw the South East Athletic Club’s midget 15-year-old team crack the top eight in its division, giving the Tigers a shot at going to provincials.
They didn’t achieve that goal, but the team did win its final game of the season.
Late Friday in Cochrane at the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League’s Sutter Cup, SEAC came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Calgary Stamps 5-3.
Ethan Machan kick-started the effort with his first of two goals 6:43 into the second period. His power play marker with 7:10 left in the third stood up as the game-winner, and he got an assist on Kaden Rath’s insurance marker with a minute to go.
Aidan Low was only credited with two saves in the third period as his team poured on the offence, finishing with 21 stops. Vaughn Strutt and Mason Mowat had the other goals for SEAC.
Cayden Dumanowski and Jarred Schrock each had two assists in the win.
Red Deer beat Lethbridge 2-1 in overtime Sunday in the Cup’s South final. Leduc beat St. Albert 5-3 in the North final.
The SEAC Midget 15's other round robin games saw them narrowly lose 3-2 to eventual South champions Red Deer and open the tourney with a 3-0 blanking at the hands of the Okotoks Oilers.
